Auf Windows – Computern werden Dateien an ihrer Endung erkannt. So weiß Windows z.B., dass Bild.jpg eine Grafikdatei ist, da die Endung .jpg für ein Grafikprogramm registriert ist. Ändert man die Zuordnung dieser Endungen, werden die Dateien mit einem anderen Programm geöffnet.
